Over the course of <strong>more than five centurie<\/strong>s, the town has assembled an extraordinary sculptural heritage that reflects the <strong>artistic, devotional, and cultural evolution of its Holy Week.<\/strong> From the sixteenth century to the present, <strong>great masters of the Andalusian Barroque and renowned contemporary religious sculptors (\u2018imagineros\u2019)<\/strong> have left their mark on a legacy that today constitutes one of the town\u2019s greatest heritage attractions. If the secondary figures are excluded, more than <strong>45 religious images<\/strong> are carried in procession through the streets of Lucena during Holy Week and the Glory processions. It is worth noting that Our Father Jesus the Nazarene is probably the <strong>oldest dressed devotional image still carried in procession during Holy Week in Andalusia.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"900\" data-end=\"1203\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lucena\u2019s sculptural heritage has been shaped over the centuries through the work of numerous \u2018imagineros\u2019, from the masters of the Andalusian Baroque to contemporary sculptors. Among the <strong data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1067\">masters of the 17th and 18th centuries<\/strong> are figures such as <strong data-start=\"1090\" data-end=\"1199\">Pedro Rold\u00e1n Onieva, Pedro de Mena Medrano, Alonso Cano, Francisco Salzillo, Diego de Ramos and Blas Molner<\/strong>, together with works attributed to <strong data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1253\">Luisa Rold\u00e1n \u201cLa Roldana\u201d<\/strong> as well as sculptures associated with the <strong data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1299\">Granada School<\/strong> of the <strong data-start=\"1305\" data-end=\"1333\">circle of Diego de Mora<\/strong>. The town\u2019s historic heritage also includes a number of <strong data-start=\"1354\" data-end=\"1373\">anonymous carvings<\/strong> dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"900\" data-end=\"1203\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are joined by sculptors active during the <strong data-start=\"1501\" data-end=\"1523\">18th and 19th centuries<\/strong>, including <strong data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1653\">Diego M\u00e1rquez Vega, Luis Tibao, Miguel Verdiguier, Andr\u00e9s Cord\u00f3n, Pedro Mu\u00f1oz de Toro, Felipe Gonz\u00e1lez and Jos\u00e9 de Medina<\/strong>, who created some of the most significant works in this remarkable collection. In the <strong data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1747\">20th century<\/strong>, Lucena\u2019s religious imagery was further enriched by works form artists such as <strong data-start=\"1805\" data-end=\"1911\">Antonio Castillo Lastrucci, Juan Mart\u00ednez Cerrillo, Luis \u00c1lvarez Duarte y Miguel \u00c1ngel Gonz\u00e1lez Jurado<\/strong>, together with sculptures produced by the <strong data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"1970\">Talleres de Olot<\/strong>. In recent decades, this heritage has been further enriched with new devotional images created by contemporary \u2018imagineros\u2019 such as <strong data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2176\">Francisco Romero Zafra, Manuel Luque Bonillo, Juan Manuel Mi\u00f1arro and Ventura G\u00f3mez<\/strong>, together with the Lucena-born sculptors <strong data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2260\">Francisco Javier L\u00f3pez del Espino<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2263\" data-end=\"2289\">Daniel Henares Paredes<\/strong>, who continue to enhace this remarkable artistic legacy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1613\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to the images carried in procession each year during Holy Week and the Glory celebrations, <strong data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1434\">numerous other carved devotional images are preserved in Lucena\u2019s churches without taking part in processional parades<\/strong>.They nevertheless form an integral part of the town\u2019s rich devotional and artistic heritage and can be admired throughout the year in its parish churches, chapels, hermitages, and convents.<\/p>\n<h1 data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1680\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h1>\n<h1 data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1680\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">XVIXVIIThe 16th and 17th centuries: The Origins of Lucena\u2019s Religious Imagery<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"942\" data-end=\"1324\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Religious imagery in Lucena begins in the <strong data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"951\">26th century<\/strong>, led by the image of <strong data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1047\">Our Father Jesus the Nazarene (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas Nazareno)<\/strong>, an anonymous work dating from the mid-16th century. It is one of the town\u2019s most deeply venerated devotional images and a central reference point of its confraternal tradition, and is probably the oldest dressed devotional image still carried in procession during Holy Week in Andalusia. Also dating from this period is the <strong data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1263\">Most Holy Christ of the Blood (Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Sangre)<\/strong>, anonymous 16th-century colonial work made of plant-based paste by Indigenous artisans in New Spain (present-day Mexico). Also of particular note is <strong data-start=\"9171\" data-end=\"9206\">Our Lady of Sorrows of St. Dominic of Guzm\u00e1n (Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de las Angustias de Santo Domingo de Guzm\u00e1n)<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014comprising a figure of the Virgin attributed to <strong data-start=\"9262\" data-end=\"9291\">Luisa Rold\u00e1n \u201cLa Roldana\u201d<\/strong>, and an anonymous 16th-century carving of Christ\u2014.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"2246\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the <strong data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1351\">17th century<\/strong> their artistic development of Lucena\u2019s religious imagery became firmly established through works associated with the Granada School and the Andalusian Baroque. Among the works dating from this period is <strong data-start=\"1518\" data-end=\"1563\">Our Father Jesus at the Column (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas de la Columna)<\/strong>, created by <strong data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1596\">Pedro Rold\u00e1n Onieva<\/strong> in 1675. The image is now accompanied by figures of a Roman soldier and an executioner, carved by <strong data-start=\"1686\" data-end=\"1717\">Juan Manuel Mi\u00f1arro in 2003<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"2246\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also dating from this century are <strong data-start=\"1754\" data-end=\"1783\">Our Father Jesus the Prisoner (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas Preso)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1814\">Our Father Jesus Fallen (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas Ca\u00eddo)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1816\" data-end=\"1850\">Mary Most Holy of Sorrow (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de la Amargura)<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"1903\">Most Holy Christ of Health and Mercy (Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Salud y Misericordia)<\/strong>, all associated with the <strong data-start=\"1933\" data-end=\"1954\">Granada School<\/strong>. Also belonging to this artistic milieu are <strong data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2037\">Our Father Jesus of Humility (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas de la Humildad)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2074\">Mary Most Holy of Sorrows (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de los Dolores)<\/strong>, both <strong data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2133\">attributed to Pedro de Mena Medrano and his circle<\/strong>, together with <strong data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2191\">Our Father Jesus at the Washing of the Feet (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas en el Sagrado Lavatorio)<\/strong>, also attributed to this 17th-century \u2018imaginero\u2019.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"2246\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Special mention should be made of the <strong data-start=\"4474\" data-end=\"4503\">Most Holy Christ of Love (Sant\u00edsimo Cristo del Amor)<\/strong>, whose <strong data-start=\"4510\" data-end=\"4571\">head is attributed to Alonso Cano and dates from the late 17th century<\/strong>, while the <strong data-start=\"4589\" data-end=\"4652\">body was carved by Luis Tibao and Andr\u00e9s Cord\u00f3n in 1808<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h1 data-start=\"3049\" data-end=\"3081\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h1>\n<h1 data-start=\"3049\" data-end=\"3081\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 18th Century: The Flourishing Baroque<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3212\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong data-start=\"2251\" data-end=\"2266\">18th century<\/strong> further enriched Lucena\u2019s sculptural heritage with new devotional images and works of outstanding artistic value. Among these are <strong data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2425\">Our Father Jesus Captive of Medinaceli (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas Cautivo de Medinaceli)<\/strong>, created by <strong data-start=\"2441\" data-end=\"2467\">Diego de Ramos in 1713<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2516\">Mary Most Holy of Passion and Souls (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de Pasi\u00f3n y \u00c1nimas)<\/strong>, an anonymous carving dating from the early 18th century. Also dating from this period is <strong data-start=\"2595\" data-end=\"2619\">St. John the Evangelist (San Juan Evangelista)<\/strong>, a work by the sculptor from Murcia <strong data-start=\"2648\" data-end=\"2670\">Francisco Salzillo<\/strong>. From <strong data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2683\">1769<\/strong> is <strong data-start=\"2689\" data-end=\"2738\">Our Father Jesus at His Entry into Jerusalem (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas en su Entrada a Jerusal\u00e9n)<\/strong>, created by <strong data-start=\"2748\" data-end=\"2770\">Diego M\u00e1rquez Vega<\/strong>, and accompanied by the figures of the <strong data-start=\"2805\" data-end=\"2860\">donkey and the colt, carved by Luis Tibao in 1779<\/strong>. Among the Marian images, special mention should be made of <strong data-start=\"2892\" data-end=\"2934\">Our Lady of Sorrows Servite (Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de los Dolores Servitas)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2936\" data-end=\"2971\">attributed to Blas Molner in 1786<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3212\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also dating from this period is the <strong data-start=\"4359\" data-end=\"4405\">Holy Burial of Our Lord Jesus (Santo Entierro de Nuestro Se\u00f1or Jesucristo)<\/strong>, a work attributed to <strong data-start=\"4424\" data-end=\"4445\">Miguel Verdiguier<\/strong>.&nbsp;The early 19th century also saw the creation of <strong data-start=\"3112\" data-end=\"3147\">Our Lady of Sorrows (Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de las Angustias)<\/strong>, popularly known as the <strong data-start=\"3163\" data-end=\"3183\">Virgen de Piedra (Stone Virgin)<\/strong>, carved by <strong data-start=\"3197\" data-end=\"3223\">Blas Molner in 1800<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h1 data-start=\"4008\" data-end=\"4060\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h1>\n<h1 data-start=\"4008\" data-end=\"4060\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 19th century: Artistic Development and Local Production<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"4062\" data-end=\"4200\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong data-start=\"3237\" data-end=\"3250\">19th century<\/strong> saw the addition of important new works to Lucena\u2019s sculptural heritage. Particularly noteworthy is the work of the sculptor <strong data-start=\"3354\" data-end=\"3377\">Pedro Mu\u00f1oz de Toro<\/strong>, who created the <strong data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3427\">Most Hoy Christ of Humiliation (Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Humillaci\u00f3n)<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"3434\" data-end=\"3464\">Christ of the Crucifixion (Cristo de la Crucifixi\u00f3n)<\/strong>, both dating from the 19th century. The first scene is now completed by two Roman soldiers, carved by<strong data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3608\"> Ventura G\u00f3mez in the late 20th century<\/strong>, while the Crucifixion group has recently been enriched by the addition of two Roman soldiers and an equestrian figure of a centurion, carved by the<strong data-start=\"3689\" data-end=\"3818\"> Lucena-born \u2018imaginero\u2019 Francisco Javier L\u00f3pez del Espino in 2024<\/strong>. Also dating from this century is <strong data-start=\"3851\" data-end=\"3884\">Our Father Jesus of the Valley (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas del Valle)<\/strong>, a work of the <strong data-start=\"3897\" data-end=\"3918\">Granada School<\/strong>, which is now carried in procession accompanied by the figure of <strong data-start=\"3976\" data-end=\"4046\">Simon of Cyrene <\/strong>, created by the<strong data-start=\"3976\" data-end=\"4046\"> Lucena-born sculptor Daniel Henares in 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4062\" data-end=\"4200\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another notable work from this period is <strong data-start=\"4078\" data-end=\"4108\">the Allegory of the Holy Faith<\/strong>, by <strong data-start=\"4118\" data-end=\"4135\">Andr\u00e9s Cord\u00f3n<\/strong>, probably one of the very few sculptural representation of this subject in Spain.<\/p>\n<h1 data-start=\"5461\" data-end=\"5494\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h1>\n<h1 data-start=\"5461\" data-end=\"5494\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 20th century: The Neo-Baroque Revival<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"5496\" data-end=\"5636\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong data-start=\"4658\" data-end=\"4670\">20th century<\/strong> brought new additions to the city\u2019s sculptural heritage, many of them associated with the revival of the Andalusian Neo-Baroque style. Among them is <strong data-start=\"4831\" data-end=\"4890\">Our Father Jesus on His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas en su Entrada Triunfal en Jerusal\u00e9n)<\/strong>, coming from the <strong data-start=\"4910\" data-end=\"4950\">Talleres de Olot and created in 1928<\/strong>. Among the Marian images, special mention should be made of <strong data-start=\"4982\" data-end=\"5017\">Mary Most Holy of Greatest Sorrow (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima del Mayor Dolor)<\/strong>, created by <strong data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5065\">Antonio Castillo Lastrucci in 1959<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"5069\" data-end=\"5111\">Mary Most Holy of Peace (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de la Paz) affectionately known as \u201cCampanitas\u201d<\/strong>, carved by <strong data-start=\"5127\" data-end=\"5161\">Juan Mart\u00ednez Cerrillo in 1983<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5496\" data-end=\"5636\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also dating from this period are several images by the \u2018imaginero\u2019 <strong data-start=\"5228\" data-end=\"5251\">Luis \u00c1lvarez Duarte<\/strong>, including <strong data-start=\"5258\" data-end=\"5297\">Our Lady of Solitude (Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Soledad, 1988)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"5299\" data-end=\"5336\">Our Lady of Succour (Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Socorro, 1995)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"5338\" data-end=\"5369\">Saint Veronica (Santa Mujer Ver\u00f3nica, 1995)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5403\">Saint Mary Magdalene (Santa Mar\u00eda Magdalena, 1996)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"5406\" data-end=\"5447\">Mary Most Holy of the Star (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de la Estrella, 2000)<\/strong>. The late 20th centrury also saw the creation of <strong data-start=\"5487\" data-end=\"5528\">Mary Most Holy of Peace and Hope (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de la Paz y Esperanza)<\/strong>, by <strong data-start=\"5538\" data-end=\"5578\">Miguel \u00c1ngel Gonz\u00e1lez Jurado in 1992<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5496\" data-end=\"5636\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the final decades of the 20th century, Lucena\u2019s religious imagery continued to evolve through the addition of new contemporary works. Among these are <strong data-start=\"5712\" data-end=\"5748\">Our Father Jesus of Goodness (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas de la Bondad)<\/strong>, created by <strong data-start=\"5764\" data-end=\"5798\">Francisco Romero Zafra in 1995<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"5809\" data-end=\"5865\">Our Father Jesus in His Agony Praying in the Garden (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas de la Agon\u00eda Orando en el Huerto)<\/strong>, carved by <strong data-start=\"5875\" data-end=\"5907\">Manuel Luque Bonillo in 1996<\/strong>. The latter was subsequently complemented by an angel, also carved by Luque Bonillo in 1997, and <strong data-start=\"5939\" data-end=\"5995\">three Apostles, created also by Luque Bonillo in 2015<\/strong>.
