Each image has its own <\/span><b>distinctive drum rhythm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , preserved through oral tradition, making the drum an integral part of the <\/span><b>aesthetic and distinctive identity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Lucena\u2019s Holy Week and Glory processions. The drummer, whose attire is the same as that of the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018santero\u2019, forms an integral part of the \u2018cuadrilla\u2019 (processional crew) and takes part in its \u2018juntas\u2019 and \u2018pase\u00edllos\u2019. Since 1981, the <\/span><b>Brotherhood of Drummers (Hermandad de Tambores) of Lucena<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has worked to preserve and pass on this sound heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For its part, the <\/span><b>\u2018torralbo\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a natural trumpet used exclusively for ritual purposes during Holy Week in Lucena. Its <\/span><b>distinctive sound is brief, high-pitched, and instantly recognisable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it is used to <\/span><b>announce the approach of the \u2018paso\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in traditional processions such as those of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene (Jes\u00fas Nazareno), Jesus Bound to the Column (Jes\u00fas Amarrado a la Columna), the Holy Burial (Santo Entierro), and the Pollina of St. Matthew and Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Pollina de San Mateo y del Carmen). Always performed<\/span><b>by a single player<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its performance forms part of the <\/span><b>ceremonial tradition of Lucena\u2019s \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added to these are two distinctive sounds that accompany the procession of the<\/span><b> Most Holy Christ of Health and Mercy (Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Salud y Misericordia)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the early hours of Maundy Thursday: the <\/span><b>\u2018Toque de Silencio\u2019 (Silence trumpet call)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, performed on the trumpet, and the sombre drum rhythm of the Brotherhood of Mourning Drummers (Hermandad de Tambores Enlutados), both<\/span><b>reinforcing the penitencial character<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the procession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243; , and during the Lent accompanied by the Brotherhood of Drummers (Hermandad de Tambores) and the <\/span><b>Choir of the Confraternity of the Blood (Coro de la Cofrad\u00eda de la Sangre), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the observance held on Passion Sunday being especially noteworthy\u2014, as well as that of <\/span><b>Jesus Fallen (Jes\u00fas Ca\u00eddo)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , featuring <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegri\u2019s celebrated Miserere<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  performed by the <\/span><b>El\u00ed Hoshan\u00e1 Chamber Choir (Coro de C\u00e1mara El\u00ed Hoshan\u00e1).<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For their part, among Lucena\u2019s Glory celebrations, the <\/span><b>\u2018campanilleros\u2019 (bell ringers) of the Venerable Confraternity of Blessed Mary of the Dawn (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de la Aurora)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provide a distinctive expression of the town\u2019s popular and rural heritage each October during their feast days, accompanying the procession with their singing. They also take part at other times of the year, including the traditional Salutation to Our Lady Araceli (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de Araceli) during the town\u2019s patronal festivities in May. For its part, the<strong> Choir of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Roc\u00edo (Coro de la Hermandad del Roc\u00edo) of Lucena<\/strong> forms an integral part of the town\u2019s sound and devotional heritage, accompanying acts of worship celebrations, and other events associated with popular religious devotion. Its \u2018sevillanas\u2019 and traditional songs help to keep alive a musical tradition deeply rooted in Lucena\u2019s confraternity identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor an we overlook one of the most renowned musical works to originate in Lucena: the <\/span><b>Misa del Campo Andaluz (Mass of Andalusian Countryside)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Composed by Antonio Villa \u00c1lvarez de Sotomayor, it is performed by the <\/span><b>Coral Lucentina and the Orchestra of the Maestro Chicano Professional Conservatoire of Music of Lucena, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conducted in recent years by V\u00edctor N\u00e1jera, on the first Sunday of May in the Major Parish Church of St. Matthew the Apostle, at the feet of Mary Most Holy of Araceli, in celebration of her feast day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also within the realm of sung tradition, special mention should be made of the <\/span><b>traditional songbook dedicated to the Patroness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, performed during her pilgrimages descending from and returning to the Sierra de Aras, as well as the <\/span><b>\u2018sevillanas\u2019 sung by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of El Roc\u00edo (Hermandad de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Roc\u00edo) of Lucena <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in honour of the Patroness of Almonte. Two distinctive flamenco styles may be singled out in connection with Holy Week and the Glory celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the one hand, the <\/span><b>saeta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a sung prayer performed from balconies and street corners along the procession route, transforming silence into prayer. The flamenco saeta has two variants: \u2018por seguirillas\u2019 and the \u2018carcelera\u2019 Lucena also has its own distinctive saeta, performed exclusively at \u2018juntas de santeros\u2019, where renowned performers such as <\/span><b>Perrilleja and Alcantarilla<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> left an enduring legacy. The Brotherhood also takes part in the Santero Mass, the Miserere of Jesus Fallen \u2015after processing through the Santiago district\u2015 and the floral offering to Our Lady of Araceli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The training of new generations is another hallmark of the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood organises <\/span><b>educational activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to teach Lucena\u2019s traditional drum rhythms, as well as the playing of the <\/span><b>torralbo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thereby passing on a unique sound heritage. Their participation is always voluntary, and any donations received are devoted to charitable causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brotherhood of Drummers has taken part in historic moments, including the Pilgrimage of the Descent of Our Lady of Araceli in 1988 and the celebrations marking the 450th anniversary of her arrival in 2012. The Brotherhood has also brought Lucena\u2019s traditiona drum rhythms to venues such as <\/span><b>FITUR in Madrid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and takes part in twinning events with children\u2019s processions as well as in band festivals held throughout the Subb\u00e9tica region. Since 1999, the Brotherhood has published an illustrated calendar featuring images of Holy Week. In 2010, this was complemented by the publication of the commemorative volume <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semana Santa, tiempo de tambores (Holy Week, Time of Drums)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, edited by Francisco L\u00f3pez Salamanca, the Official Chronicler of the Town, with all proceeds donated to Caritas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, the Brotherhood had around sixty members, the majority of them children aged between four and fifteen. Its sat was blessed in 1995 in Jer\u00f3nimo Medina Street, establishing a permanent meeting place for this tradition, which continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of those who, through the sound of their drums, keep the heartbeat of Holy Week in Lucena alive. The Brotherhood is currently headed by Jos\u00e9 Serena.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brotherhood has its own distinctive attire. For the Misereres, members wear a navy blue or black jacket, a white shirt, a burgundy tie, and grey trousers. For the \u2018Llamada de Hermanos\u2019 on Passion Sunday, they wear a burgundy tunic, a white cord, a burgundy tie, and a \u2018capirote\u2019.
