Holy Week and Glory celebrations in Lucena are distinguished by a cultural richness that extends beyond the visual and the ritual into a unique realm: the <\/span>sound and intangible heritage they preserve<\/b>, part of it deeply bound to the spirit of the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019 tradition. Sounds, songs, and musical performances shape a distinctive identity that accompanies and frames every procession and the acts of worship of the confraternities and brotherhoods, creating a language of its own, capable of moving both confraternity members and visitors alike.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Traditional Own Instruments<\/span><\/h3>\n

The drum is an essential element of the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019: <\/span>it sets the pace of the throne<\/b> during the procession, adapting its rhythm to the image, the route, and the instructions of the \u2018manijero\u2019. Each image has its own <\/span>distinctive drum rhythm<\/b> , preserved through oral tradition, making the drum an integral part of the <\/span>aesthetic and distinctive identity<\/b> of Lucena\u2019s Holy Week and Glory processions. The drummer, whose attire is the same as that of the<\/span> \u2018santero\u2019, forms an integral part of the \u2018cuadrilla\u2019 (processional crew) and takes part in its \u2018juntas\u2019 and \u2018pase\u00edllos\u2019. Since 1981, the <\/span>Brotherhood of Drummers (Hermandad de Tambores) of Lucena<\/b> has worked to preserve and pass on this sound heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

For its part, the <\/span>\u2018torralbo\u2019<\/b> is a natural trumpet used exclusively for ritual purposes during Holy Week in Lucena. Its <\/span>distinctive sound is brief, high-pitched, and instantly recognisable<\/b>, and it is used to <\/span>announce the approach of the \u2018paso\u2019<\/b> in traditional processions such as those of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene (Jes\u00fas Nazareno), Jesus Bound to the Column (Jes\u00fas Amarrado a la Columna), the Holy Burial (Santo Entierro), and the Pollina of St. Matthew and Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Pollina de San Mateo y del Carmen). Always performed<\/span>by a single player<\/b>, its performance forms part of the <\/span>ceremonial tradition of Lucena\u2019s \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Added to these are two distinctive sounds that accompany the procession of the<\/span> Most Holy Christ of Health and Mercy (Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Salud y Misericordia)<\/b> in the early hours of Maundy Thursday: the <\/span>\u2018Toque de Silencio\u2019 (Silence trumpet call)<\/b>, performed on the trumpet, and the sombre drum rhythm of the Brotherhood of Mourning Drummers (Hermandad de Tambores Enlutados), both<\/span>reinforcing the penitencial character<\/b> of the procession.<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, the <\/span>misereres<\/b> hold a special place, particularly that of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene (Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas Nazareno), \u2014celebrated every Friday throughout the year  , and during the Lent accompanied by the Brotherhood of Drummers (Hermandad de Tambores) and the <\/span>Choir of the Confraternity of the Blood (Coro de la Cofrad\u00eda de la Sangre), <\/b>with the observance held on Passion Sunday being especially noteworthy\u2014, as well as that of <\/span>Jesus Fallen (Jes\u00fas Ca\u00eddo)<\/b> , featuring <\/span>Allegri\u2019s celebrated Miserere<\/span><\/i> performed by the <\/span>El\u00ed Hoshan\u00e1 Chamber Choir (Coro de C\u00e1mara El\u00ed Hoshan\u00e1).<\/b><\/p>\n

For their part, among Lucena\u2019s Glory celebrations, the <\/span>\u2018campanilleros\u2019 (bell ringers) of the Venerable Confraternity of Blessed Mary of the Dawn (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de la Aurora)<\/b> provide a distinctive expression of the town\u2019s popular and rural heritage each October during their feast days, accompanying the procession with their singing. They also take part at other times of the year, including the traditional Salutation to Our Lady Araceli (Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de Araceli) during the town\u2019s patronal festivities in May. For its part, the Choir of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Roc\u00edo (Coro de la Hermandad del Roc\u00edo) of Lucena<\/strong> forms an integral part of the town\u2019s sound and devotional heritage, accompanying acts of worship celebrations, and other events associated with popular religious devotion. Its \u2018sevillanas\u2019 and traditional songs help to keep alive a musical tradition deeply rooted in Lucena\u2019s confraternity identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nor an we overlook one of the most renowned musical works to originate in Lucena: the <\/span>Misa del Campo Andaluz (Mass of Andalusian Countryside)<\/b>. Composed by Antonio Villa \u00c1lvarez de Sotomayor, it is performed by the <\/span>Coral Lucentina and the Orchestra of the Maestro Chicano Professional Conservatoire of Music of Lucena, <\/b>conducted in recent years by V\u00edctor N\u00e1jera, on the first Sunday of May in the Major Parish Church of St. Matthew the Apostle, at the feet of Mary Most Holy of Araceli, in celebration of her feast day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also within the realm of sung tradition, special mention should be made of the <\/span>traditional songbook dedicated to the Patroness<\/b>, performed during her pilgrimages descending from and returning to the Sierra de Aras, as well as the <\/span>\u2018sevillanas\u2019 sung by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of El Roc\u00edo (Hermandad de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Roc\u00edo) of Lucena <\/b>in honour of the Patroness of Almonte. Accompanied by the traditional flute and \u2018tamboril\u2019, they are performed as the brotherhood sets out for the village in the days leading up to Pentecost Monday, usually falling in June.  <\/span><\/p>\n

The Saeta and the Fandango of Lucena<\/span><\/h3>\n

Special mention should be made of <\/span>flamenco<\/b> in this land, the birthplace of great singers and guitarrists throughout the ages. Two distinctive flamenco styles may be singled out in connection with Holy Week and the Glory celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the one hand, the <\/span>saeta<\/b>, a sung prayer performed from balconies and street corners along the procession route, transforming silence into prayer. The flamenco saeta has two variants: \u2018por seguirillas\u2019 and the \u2018carcelera\u2019 Lucena also has its own distinctive saeta, performed exclusively at \u2018juntas de santeros\u2019, where renowned performers such as <\/span>Perrilleja and Alcantarilla<\/b> left an enduring legacy. In addition, the town has produced many distinguished \u2018saeteros\u2019, who have taken this art form to prestiguious stages, helping to strengthen the musical identity of Holy Week in Lucena.<\/span><\/p>\n

The saeta has two landmark events in the confraternity calendar which, at the present, are no longer held on a regular basis: the <\/span>Exaltaci\u00f3n de la Saeta<\/b>, a tribute to this genre in which the spoken word and singing come together, and the historic <\/span>Concurso de Saetas<\/b>, originally promoted by the Pe\u00f1a El Santero and recently revived as a platform for encouraging and recognising new performers.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, there is the <\/span>Fandango de Lucena<\/b>, celebrated through a National Fandango Contest held in the town every two years, attracting \u2018cantaores\u2019 (flamenco singers) from across Spain. They can also commonly be heard at some of the flamenco festivals held in the town, such as the Curro Lucena Flamenco Singing Festival, in honour of the distinguished flamenco singer named Favourite Son of the Town, and during the procession on the feast day of Mary Most Holy of Araceli, on the first Sunday of May.  The Pe\u00f1a Flamenca of Lucena, the third oldest flamenco association in Spain, founded in 1959, is dedicated to promoting and preserving the Lucena\u2019s flamenco style, among many other activities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lucena\u2019s rich sound heritage also draws on its <\/span>organ heritage<\/b>. The town\u2019s churches preserve historic pipe organs that, for centuries, have accompanied the liturgy and acts of worship during Lent and Holy Week, lending them a solemn and majestic tone. These instruments are not only heritage assets of the highest significance, but also a living part of the soundtrack of Lucena\u2019s popular religious devotion. Particularly noteworthy are the organs, still in use, in the <\/span> Conventual Church of the Mother of God of the Franciscan Friars and the Parish Church of St. Dominic of Guzm\u00e1n.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

 Lucena\u2019s musical tradition also includes a distinguished repertoire of <\/span>chamber music and sacred music<\/b>, performed during acts of worship, processional transfers, and other liturgical celebrations. These compositions, distinguisched by their sobriety and spirituality, create an atmosphere of reverence that contrasts with the briliance of the processional marches, thus completing the town\u2019s rich soundscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aforementioned ensembles, the Coral Lucentina and the El\u00ed Hoshan\u00e1 Chamber Choir<\/strong> , also take part in other notable events of Holy Week and the Glory celebrations in Lucena, providing the musical accompaniment for the Novena to Mary Most Holy of Araceli and the Passion of Christ performance, respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is an <\/span>intangible heritage of incalculable value<\/b> in which every note, every drum rhythm, and every voice contributes to shaping the town\u2019s unique identity. Moreover, beyond the sound heritage associated with sacred art, numerous musicians and artists working in other musical genres carry Lucena\u2019s name to every corner of the world. <\/span><\/h3>\n

The drum is one of the cornerstones of <\/span>Lucena\u2019s santer\u00eda<\/b> and of the distinctive aesthetic of Holy Week and the Glory celebrations in Lucena. The harmony of the processional steps depends upon its precise rthythm, especially in the processions of Christ, where the cadence determines the distinctive <\/span>paso botao<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A drummer who fails to keep a precise rhythm can undo the effort and dedication of even the most experienced santeros. His role is not confined to the procession; rather, he <\/span>is present at every key moment of Lucena\u2019s santer\u00eda<\/b>: the \u2018juntas\u2019, the \u2018gasto\u2019, the \u2018paseo de la cuadrilla\u2019, and every other occasion that would be incomplete without the counterpoint of the drum. He is, therefore, an essential yet singular \u2015indeed, somewhat unorthodox\u2015 figure within the world of \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019, even though it is his natural and exclusive sphere.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aware of this heritage, in <\/span>March 1981<\/b> a group of veteran drummers \u2014including Rafael Aranda, Agust\u00edn Bl\u00e1zquez, Francisco G\u00f3mez, Joaqu\u00edn Montilla, Miguel Pino, Francisco Ruiz y Antonio Santos\u2014 founded the <\/span>Hermandad de Tambores (Brotherhood of Drummers)<\/b> with the aim of reviving the ancient \u2018Llamada\u2019, the traditional drum rhythm performed by the drummers of the Brotherhood of Jesus the Nazarene in the early hours of Good Friday. Their initiative received the endorsement of the Archconfraternity of Jesus the Nazarene in 1988, and since then the Brotherhood of Drummers has accompanied the Governing Board to the Church of St. Dominic to collect the parish priest and attend the solemn Miserere on Passion Sunday. The Brotherhood also takes part in the Santero Mass, the Miserere of Jesus Fallen \u2015after processing through the Santiago district\u2015 and the floral offering to Our Lady of Araceli.<\/span><\/p>\n

The training of new generations is another hallmark of the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood organises <\/span>educational activities<\/b> to teach Lucena\u2019s traditional drum rhythms, as well as the playing of the <\/span>torralbo<\/b>, thereby passing on a unique sound heritage. Their participation is always voluntary, and any donations received are devoted to charitable causes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Brotherhood of Drummers has taken part in historic moments, including the Pilgrimage of the Descent of Our Lady of Araceli in 1988 and the celebrations marking the 450th anniversary of her arrival in 2012. The Brotherhood has also brought Lucena\u2019s traditiona drum rhythms to venues such as <\/span>FITUR in Madrid<\/b> and takes part in twinning events with children\u2019s processions as well as in band festivals held throughout the Subb\u00e9tica region. Since 1999, the Brotherhood has published an illustrated calendar featuring images of Holy Week. In 2010, this was complemented by the publication of the commemorative volume <\/span>Semana Santa, tiempo de tambores (Holy Week, Time of Drums)<\/span><\/i>, edited by Francisco L\u00f3pez Salamanca, the Official Chronicler of the Town, with all proceeds donated to Caritas.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2021, the Brotherhood had around sixty members, the majority of them children aged between four and fifteen. Its sat was blessed in 1995 in Jer\u00f3nimo Medina Street, establishing a permanent meeting place for this tradition, which continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of those who, through the sound of their drums, keep the heartbeat of Holy Week in Lucena alive. The Brotherhood is currently headed by Jos\u00e9 Serena. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Brotherhood has its own distinctive attire. For the Misereres, members wear a navy blue or black jacket, a white shirt, a burgundy tie, and grey trousers. For the \u2018Llamada de Hermanos\u2019 on Passion Sunday, they wear a burgundy tunic, a white cord, a burgundy tie, and a \u2018capirote\u2019. The Brotherhood is currently working to secure Lucena\u2019s inclusion in the <\/span>Consorcio Nacional de los Pueblos del Tambor y el Bombo.<\/b> (National Consortium of Drum and Bass Drum Towns)<\/p>\n
