Among its most endearing and distinctive expressions is the <\/span><b>Children\u2019s Holy Week<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a celebration that each year, on the Saturday following Easter, transforms the streets of the town into a true nursery of faith, tradition, and the future of the confraternity world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its origins date back to the 19th century, when in 1855 Lucena and other nearby towns were struck by a severe cholera epidemic. As a preventive measure, children recreated the processions of the adults in small processional corteges, giving rise to what is now known as Children\u2019s Holy Week That spontaneous initiative gradually became embedded in local life and, in 1973, the Agrupaci\u00f3n de Cofrad\u00edas officially decided to organise a <\/span><b>Children\u2019s Processions Contest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, awarding each participant a commemorative medal featuring the official Holy Week poster of that year. Far from being lost, this custom has endured to the present day as a symbolic gesture of recognition for all the children who take part.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1985, the celebration ceased to be competitive and adopted the name <\/span><b>Desfile de Procesiones Infantiles ante Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas Nazareno (Children\u2019s Processions Parade before Our Father Jesus the Nazarene)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as its route includes a central moment: the passage of the processional corteges before the Chapel of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene, one fo the town\u2019s deepest devotion. Three years later, in 1988, responsibility for organising the parade was transferred to the <\/span><b>Pe\u00f1a El Santero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cultural association which has since been dedicated to keeping this tradition alive with great commitment and affection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, <\/span><b>more than one hundred children\u2019s processional thrones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, carefully crafted, make their way through the streets of Lucena, carried on the shoulders of boys and girls who recreate Lucena\u2019s distinctive way of processing: the <\/span><b>\u2018santer\u00eda\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wearing tunics adapted to their size, with their faces uncovered and under the direction of their own \u2018manijero\u2019, the young \u2018santeros\u2019 faithfully imitate the characteristic movement of the thrones upon the shoulders, giving them that unique motion which distinguishes Holy Week in Lucena. The procession is completed by girls dressed in the traditional \u2018mantilla\u2019, members of the brotherhood carrying their insignia, and drummers who set the rhythm of the procession.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this gives rise to a <\/span><b>colourful and moving parade, watched by thousands of spectators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who crowd the streets to witness the enthusiasm and dedication of the youngest participants. Children\u2019s Holy Week has thus become a true school in which children experience the art of the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019 firsthand and learn values such as respect, coexistence, teamwork, and love for their traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, this event has a <\/span><b>strong family and community dimension<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Parents, grandparents, and older siblings help in the creation of the small processional thrones, passing on knowledge, craftsmanship techniques, and, above all, the confraternal and \u2018santero\u2019 spirit that has shaped Lucena for centuries. In this way, Children\u2019s Holy Week ensures the continuity of the tradition, planting in children the seed of a faith and commitment that will one day make them \u2018santeros\u2019, \u2018mantillas\u2019, brotherhood members, and proclamers of Holy Week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, Children\u2019s Holy Week in Lucena is not merely an endearing and colourful spectacle, but a living and dynamic heritage <\/span><b>that embodies the intergenerational transmission of the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A celebration that moves people through the tenderness of its young participants and that reaffirms, year after year, that Holy Week in Lucena has a future because it is rooted in the enthusiasm and hopes of its children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;|49px|||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><b>Origins and Development of the Pe\u00f1a El Santero&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Pe\u00f1a El Santero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was founded in 1982 under the presidency of Antonio Cobos. It first headquarter, located  on Juan Palma Garc\u00eda Street, was conceived as a multifunctional space featuring an assembly hall, bar facilities, a permanent exhibition, and a rich photographic display of the town\u2019s processional thrones, \u2018cuadrillas\u2019, and \u2018santeros\u2019. From its earliest years, it became known for organising lectures dedicated to the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019 and for creating the prestigious <\/span><b>Saetas Contest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which for many years awarded prizes both to the finest \u2018cantaores\u2019 (flamenco singers) and to the most outstanding \u2018cuadrillas\u2019 (processional crews), not without occasionally giving rise to intense controversy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1983, <\/span><b>Gonzalo Angulo Vigo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> assumed the presidency, and in 1986 the Pe\u00f1a El Santero moved to a new, more modest headquarters, marking the beginning of a period during which <\/span><b>Fernando D\u00edaz and Rafael M\u00e1rmol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worked tirelessly to ensure the continuity of the association. However, the Pe\u00f1a did not disappear as such: its activities continued in other areas of Lucena\u2019s confraternity world, particularly in the <\/span><b>organisation of children\u2019s processions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which became firmly established as a breeding ground for future generations of \u2018santeros\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b>Santero Mass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, celebrated annually at the Sanctuary of Aras and organised by the Royal Archconfraternity of Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de Araceli (Our Lady of Araceli), became one of the association\u2019s most significant events, in which the Pe\u00f1a El Santero collaborates. From 2014, with the incorporation of <\/span><b>Eduardo Garc\u00eda L\u00f3pez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a register of \u2018santeros\u2019 was established and a new governing board was formed, which was officially entered in the municipal register of associations in 2017. That same year, Eduardo Garc\u00eda assumed the presidency.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;|44px|||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Exaltation of the Saeta and National Contest<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">In 2017 the Pe\u00f1a succeeded in reviving the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><b>Exaltation of the Saeta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>National Contest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which had dissapeared in 2002. These events have since been held on subsequent occasions, although not on a fixed annual basis.
