During these weeks, Lucena is immersed in a distinctive atmosphere shaped by the sounds of the drum<\/strong>, Lenten religious worships<\/strong>, devotional kissing ceremonies (besamanos)<\/strong>, the \u2018via crucis\u2019 (Stations of the Cross)<\/strong>, the preparation of processional thrones, and the constant activity of its brotherhoods and confraternities. The preparation for Holy Week mobilises thousands of people and keep numerous traditional crafts,<\/strong> forms of community organisation, and practices transmitted orally from generation to generation.<\/h3>\n

Lent in Lucena<\/strong> constitute, ultimately, a fundamental expression of the town\u2019s intangible heritage.<\/strong> A period deeply rooted in the collective identity, in which popular religiosity<\/strong>, heritage, tradition, and civic participation are naturally and continuously interwowen, heralding the arrival of one of the most distinctive celebrations in Andalusia..<\/h3>\n

Particularly noteworthy is the setting up of devotional altars<\/strong> during this period, carried out by members of the various brotherhoods and confraternities, who each year take great care to present their sacred images with special aesthetic, devotional, and symbolic attention. In the days immediately preceding the start of Holy Week, visitors can also admire the processional \u2018pasos\u2019 prepared within the churches for their penitential procession,<\/strong> where religious administrators, \u2018camareas\u2019 (images caretakers), those responsible for floral decoration and candles, together with members of the brotherhoods and confraternities, ensure that no detail is overlooked in adorning the thrones of their sacred images.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the events with a distinctive characther, two \u2018via crucis\u2019 (Station of the Cross) of deep-rooted tradition stand out: the <\/span>Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Humillaci\u00f3n (Most Hoy Christ of the Humiliation)<\/b> \u2014carried on the shoulders of women from the confraternity\u2014 and that of the <\/span>Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Salud y Misericordia (Silencio) (Most Holy Christ of Health and Mercy – Silence)<\/b>, considered the oldest in the town. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the musical sphere, <\/span>Miserere worships<\/b> occupy a special place \u2015such as that of Nuestro Padre Jes\u00fas Nazareno (Our Father Jesus the Nazarene)<\/strong>, which is held every Friday of the year and, during Lent, features the participation of the Brotherhood of Drummers and the Choir of the Confraternity of the Blood, or that of Nuestro Padre<\/strong> <\/span>Jes\u00fas Ca\u00eddo (Our Father Jesus Fallen)<\/b>, with the celebrated <\/span>Miserere<\/span><\/i> by Allegri performed by the El\u00ed Hoshan\u00e1 Chamber Choir\u2015 alongside concerts of processional marches and recitals of \u2018saetas\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the calendar and specific dates change each year, the pattern remains constant: liturgy, music, formation, and outreach are interwoven to prepare both confraternity members and visitors for Holy Week<\/span><\/p>\n

That is the moment of the juntas<\/b>, during which the <\/span>manijero (processional foreman)<\/b> gives instructions to his<\/span>cuadrilla (crew)<\/b> and refines the movement of the processional throne, with particular emphasis on the Junta Marca, which serves to equalise the height of the \u2018santeros\u2019 All of this follows the legacy of unwritten rules of respect and solemnity transmitted from generation to generation<\/span><\/p>\n

To the rhythm of the <\/span>drum <\/b> \u2014and, for certain Passion thrones, the<\/span>\u2018torralbo\u2019<\/b>\u2014 the \u2018juntas\u2019 of the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019 are where the distinctive styles that define Lucena are practised and refined. This aesthetic code, refined over decades, turns every procession into<\/span>living art in motion<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the pinnacle of the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019 is reached during Holy Week, Lent serves to reinforce its value as an item of intangible cultural heritage. Recognised as a <\/span>National Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Inter\u00e9s Cultural Nacional)<\/b>, this unique way of carrying the processional thrones \u2014on the shoulders, barefaced, under the direction of the \u2018manijero\u2019 and to the rhythm of the drum and the \u2018torralbo\u2019\u2014 is not rehearsed: it is lived to the fullest in the very moment of the procession.<\/span><\/p>\n

During these days, visitors become familiar with the distinctive vocabulary of this tradition \u2015\u2019horquillo\u2019, \u2018varal\u2019, \u2018cu\u00f1a\u2019, \u2018pase\u00edllo\u2019, \u2018contras\u2019…\u2015 and discover its ritual, social and symbolic character.<\/span><\/p>\n

The opportunity to <\/span>visit<\/b> these workshops and spaces \u2015when open days are organised\u2015 allows visitors to gain an understanding of the material foundations of Holy Week in Lucena and to appreciate the economic and cultural value that craftsmanship brings to the confraternity tradition. <\/span>Added to this is the <\/span>Holy Week <\/strong><\/a> Proclamation<\/strong><\/a>, organised by the Agrupaci\u00f3n de Cofrad\u00edas of Lucena, together with the various proclamations organised by the brotherhood and confraternities themselves<\/strong><\/a>, a tradition that each year brings together journalists, historians, musicians, and confraternity members to proclaim, interpret, and recount Holy Week from fresh and diverse perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n
