{"id":5530,"date":"2026-05-18T14:18:36","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T12:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/semanasantalucena.com\/holy-week-in-lucena-a-note-published-in-a-madrid-newspaper-in-1896\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T07:43:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T05:43:21","slug":"holy-week-in-lucena-a-note-published-in-a-madrid-newspaper-in-1896","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/semanasantalucena.com\/en\/holy-week-in-lucena-a-note-published-in-a-madrid-newspaper-in-1896\/","title":{"rendered":"Holy Week in Lucena: A Note Published in a Madrid Newspaper in 1896"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Author: Manuel Guerrero Cabrera, professor and writer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(Article published in the 2022 edition of Torralbo magazine)<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u2018Movimiento Cat\u00f3lico\u2019 was a newspaper published in Madrid and founded in 1889 by Bishop Ciriaco Sancha y Herv\u00e1s \u2015later named a Cardinal\u2015 following the First Spanish Catholic Congress, with the aim of uniting the various Catholic currents in opposition to republicanism and secularism.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its edition of 6th April 1896, the newspaper published a news report entitled \u00abemana Santa en Lucena (Carta de nuestro corresponsal\u00bb (Holy Week in Lucena, Letter from Our Correspondent), describing the atmosphere and the Holy Week processional cort\u00e8ges held in our town that year. With regard to the former, the correspondent \u2015whose identity we have unable to establish\u2015 remarks upon the large congregations attending the liturgical Offices, reflecting Lucena\u2019s \u00abCatholic sentiments\u00bb. As for the processional cort\u00e8ges, he begins with those departing from the Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel: \u00abJesus Entering Jerusalem\u00bb, \u00abThe Arrest of Jesus\u00bb, \u00abJesus Bearing the Cross\u00bb, and \u00abMary Most Holy of Sorrows\u00bb. These were, of course, the processional thrones belonging to the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which at that time held its Penitential Procession on Holy Wednesday. Curiously, however, no mention is made of the Most Holy Christ of the Humiliation, although it is possible that the newspaper\u2019s correspondent simply omitted it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With regard to Holy Thursday, among the processional cort\u00e8ges departing from the Hermitage of Our Lady of Peace and the Vera Cruz, only the following processional thrones are mentioned: \u00abThe Washing of the Feet\u00bb, \u00abChrist Bound to the Column\u00bb, \u00abJesus Fallen Beneath the Cross\u00bb, and \u00abOur Lady of Sorrow\u00bb. These were, in fact, the processional thrones of the Archconfraternity of the Vera Cruz and, as with the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, it may be assumed that the correspondent omitted several others, such as the Holy Faith or the Prisoner.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor is there any mention of the Holy Women of Saint John in connection with the Good Friday procession. It should also be noted that the correspondent states that the devotional images departed from the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzm\u00e1n (although the Church of Saint Peter Martyr is itself historically associated with the Dominican Order). In summary, the 1896 newspaper report does refer to the processional cort\u00e8ges of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene, Mary Most Holy of Succour, and the Holy Burial of Our Lord Jesus Christ, noting that \u00abit was truly remarkable to behold the uplifting and devout spectable presented by some one thousand brethren of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene, clad in purple tunics, together with a great number of ladies bearing candles and many grateful devotees who, in fulfilment of vows, dragged heavy chains or wore crowns of thorns upon their heads while carrying the Cross upon their shoulders\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To these, the report adds that there was one further procession, \u00abthe first ever to take place, departing from the Major Parish Church of Saint Matthew the Apostle on Palm Sunday\u00bb: Mary Most Holy of Sorrows. This was undoubtedly the devotional image of Our Lady of Sorrows belonging to the Servite Congregation, preceded by \u00aba large crowd of people\u00bb<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the correspondent of \u2018El Movimiento Cat\u00f3lico\u2019 expresses the hope \u2015indeed, \u00abimplores\u00bb, to use his own word\u2015 that in future years the Brotherhood of the Passion (\u00abthat of Saint Francis\u00bb, as he describes it) and the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Solitude might once again returns to the streets in procession.
