29th March 2026.- Holy Week in Lucena officially began yesterday with the Proclamation held at the Major Parish Church of Saint Matthew the Apostle, a ceremony that each year marks the opening of Holy Week in the town.<\/p>\n\n
The Proclamation was delivered by Jaime Verd\u00fa Orellana<\/strong>, Secretary of the Agrupaci\u00f3n de Cofrad\u00edas and of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of the Blood, who gave a richly crafted address focusing on the elements that define the distinctive identity of Holy Week in Lucena. Throughout his address, he explored the principal features that define Lucena\u2019s Holy Week: the \u2018santer\u00eda\u2019, the distinctive way in which the processional thrones are carried, the role of the \u2018cuadrillas\u2019, and the characteristic sounds of the drum and the \u2018torralbo\u2019, weaving them together into a unified vision of the tradition.<\/p>\n\n The proclaimer evoked a number of emblematic moments and places, from the \u2018Madrug\u00e1\u2019 of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene to the \u2018Llanete de la Columna\u2019, reflecting on the various devotional images and the significance that each day holds within the wider celebration of Holy Week. His address offered an insider\u2019s interpretation of a celebration that brings together devotion, heritage, and a distinctive way of understanding Holy Week in Lucena. <\/p>\n\n The proclaimer was introduced by his son Jaime Verd\u00fa Mart\u00edn<\/strong>, who reflected on his father\u2019s life and the way this tradition is experienced within their family. The ceremony was completed by Rafael Ram\u00edrez Ponferrada<\/strong>, Publications Officer of the Agrupaci\u00f3n de Cofrad\u00edas of Lucena. <\/p>\n\n Before the proclamation, the \u00abManolo Ram\u00edrez\u00bb Brotherhood Award<\/strong>, was presented posthumously to Mrs.Teresa Botella P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, the first female Head of a Brotherhood in Lucena\u2019s Holy Week. The award was received by her husband, Jos\u00e9 Guerrero<\/strong>, and presented by the President of the Agrupaci\u00f3n de Cofrad\u00edas of Lucena, Antonio D\u00edaz,<\/strong> in a particularly moving moment that paid tribute to her lifelong dedication and commitment to the brotherhood community.<\/p>\n\n The ceremony was attended by representatives of civil, military and ecclesiastical institutions, together with members of Lucena\u2019s brotherhoods.
