Established on 29 June 1928<\/strong>, the brotherhood’s fundamental purpose was to spread religion among young people. Its first governing board was made up of Crist\u00f3bal Escudero Bujalance<\/strong>, Hermano Mayor; Juan Palma Garz\u00f3n<\/strong>, Deputy Hermano Mayor; Francisco Rodr\u00edguez Delgado<\/strong>, treasurer; Joaqu\u00edn Galindo Cuadra<\/strong>, deputy treasurer; Francisco Evangelista Vera<\/strong>, secretary; and Jos\u00e9 D\u00edaz Fern\u00e1ndez de Villalta<\/strong>, deputy secretary. Board members: Miguel Rold\u00e1n Pineda<\/strong>, Rafael Cuenca Escudero<\/strong>, Pedro V\u00edbora del Pino<\/strong> and Francisco Mora Romero<\/strong>. Almoner brothers: Felipe Ca\u00f1ete Viso<\/strong> and Juan Jos\u00e9 Hoyos S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The titular image was acquired from the Talleres de Olot (Gerona)<\/strong> by Crist\u00f3bal Escudero Bujalance<\/strong>, who paid its price of 800 pesetas. The carving is made of wood paste, and was later restored in 1993<\/strong> and 1995<\/strong> by Antonio Ortega Lozano<\/strong>. It depicts Jesus on a colt, carrying a palm branch in his left hand along with the gilded-cord halter, unveiled in 1995, while his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. The Lord wears on his head a gilded halo<\/strong> unveiled in 1928. The Christ’s throne, in Neo-Baroque<\/strong> style, is made of mahogany-coloured wood with carved ornamentation alluding to Palm Sunday<\/strong>, featuring Passion-related motifs and white opaline glass tulip lamp shades.<\/p>\n

The first procession took place in 1929<\/strong>, with a team of bearers led by Ignacio Serrano Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong>. From the following year, and until 1944<\/strong>, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Ranchal G\u00f3mez<\/strong> held the position of team leader. By the middle of the century, it shared its titular status with Our Lady of Sorrows<\/strong>, of the Servite congregation, and the Christ of Mercy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1968<\/strong>, for health reasons, the Hermano Mayor Francisco Escudero Bujalance<\/strong> handed over his position to Antonio V\u00edbora \u00c1lvarez de Sotomayor<\/strong>. The brotherhood, which formalised its statutes in 2007<\/strong>, was a founding member of the Agrupaci\u00f3n de Cofrad\u00edas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 2014<\/strong>, Antonio Ca\u00f1ete Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong> took charge of the confraternity. Except for the days around Palm Sunday<\/strong>, the image used to be moved to the Parroquia Mayor<\/strong> from the oratory of its founding Hermano Mayor, Crist\u00f3bal Escudero<\/strong>, until 2019<\/strong>, when it was placed in the Iglesia Mayor Parroquial de San Mateo Ap\u00f3stol<\/strong>, where it currently occupies an altar at the foot of the Gospel-side nave.<\/p>\n

It carries out its penitential procession accompanied by a large number of brothers carrying their blessed palm branches, with special participation from the youngest members. It is accompanied by the characteristic sound of the Lucena torralbo<\/strong>, one of the most distinctive and singular elements of the sound heritage of Lucena’s Holy Week<\/strong>. Its procession is organised through the historic figure of the cuadrillero<\/strong>, preserving a particular form of organisation unique to this Lucena tradition.<\/p>\n
