The outfit is completed with a small shawl (mantoncillo), a flower in the hair and eye-catching earrings. Around the neck they wear their brotherhood&#8217;s medal, hung on a cord, as a symbol of belonging and devotion to the Virgin.<\/p>\n<p>Men wear the short Andalusian suit, made up of fitted trousers, a white shirt, a waistcoat and a short jacket. They sometimes wear a wide-brimmed hat and riding boots. According to tradition, it was the hunter <strong data-start=\"297\" data-end=\"316\">Gregorio Medina<\/strong> who found the sacred carving hidden among the undergrowth, in the hollow of a tree, dressed in a white and green tunic and venerated at that time under the earlier title of <strong data-start=\"472\" data-end=\"506\">Our Lady of the Remedies<\/strong>. That image, later venerated as <strong data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"586\">Our Lady of las Rocinas<\/strong>, would in time become one of the great devotional symbols of Andalusia and of all Spain under the title of <strong data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"759\">Our Lady of Roc\u00edo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"1035\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Virgin was proclaimed Patroness of Almonte in the 17th century and canonically crowned on 8 June 1919, with the authorisation of Pope Benedict XV. Her pilgrimage, celebrated every Pentecost, is today one of the greatest expressions of popular religious devotion in the world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"426\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Lucena, Roc\u00edo devotion began to grow thanks to numerous residents and families who travelled individually to the village near Almonte. The decisive impetus came with the <strong data-start=\"190\" data-end=\"246\">Golden Jubilee of the Coronation of Our Lady of Roc\u00edo<\/strong>, celebrated in May <strong data-start=\"270\" data-end=\"278\">1969<\/strong>, when a group trip was organised whose extraordinary reception sparked the wish to formally establish a Roc\u00edo brotherhood in the city.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"769\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the support of <strong data-start=\"444\" data-end=\"474\">D. Carlos Delgado Paniagua<\/strong>, parish priest of the <strong data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"532\">Parroquia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Carmen<\/strong>, the founding board was formed, made up of devotees such as <strong data-start=\"598\" data-end=\"755\">Juan Lara, Manuel Arroyo, Emilio Mar\u00edn, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00edn, Pablo Plaza, Jos\u00e9 L\u00f3pez, Manuel Onieva, Juan Mar\u00edn, Juan Bujalance, Juan Luis Reyes and Antonio Blancas<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"1187\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"825\">Brotherhood of Our Lady of Roc\u00edo of Lucena<\/strong> was officially founded on <strong data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"876\">2 June 1970<\/strong>. Its statutes were approved on <strong data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"935\">17 March 1972<\/strong> by the Bishop of C\u00f3rdoba, <strong data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"1003\">Monsignor Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Cirarda Lachiondo<\/strong>, and it was canonically established in the <strong data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1088\">Parroquia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Carmen<\/strong>, the church with which it has maintained a close spiritual, pastoral and personal bond ever since.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1508\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">That same year, the <strong data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1238\">Mother Brotherhood of Almonte<\/strong> recognised the Lucena brotherhood as a filial member, granting it number <strong data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1315\">41<\/strong> and giving it its first official presentation at the <strong data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1386\">1972 Pilgrimage<\/strong>. It was sponsored by the <strong data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1446\">Roc\u00edo Brotherhood of Barcelona<\/strong>, which visited Lucena for the first time on <strong data-start=\"1485\" data-end=\"1507\">17 May 1972<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1877\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Lucena brotherhood holds a prominent place within the Andalusian Roc\u00edo movement, being the <strong data-start=\"1606\" data-end=\"1664\">first Roc\u00edo Brotherhood in the province of C\u00f3rdoba<\/strong>. It later sponsored the <strong data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1729\">Roc\u00edo Brotherhood of C\u00f3rdoba<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1741\">1977<\/strong> and that of <strong data-start=\"1752\" data-end=\"1775\">Castillo de Locub\u00edn<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"1779\" data-end=\"1787\">1983<\/strong>, contributing decisively to the spread of Roc\u00edo devotion in Eastern Andalusia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"33\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"33\">The Brotherhood House in El Roc\u00edo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"35\" data-end=\"210\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the brotherhood&#8217;s great heritage milestones was the acquisition, in <strong data-start=\"113\" data-end=\"121\">1980<\/strong>, of a plot of land in the village near Almonte to build what is now the <strong data-start=\"181\" data-end=\"209\">Brotherhood House of Lucena<\/strong>. The first stone was laid during the October pilgrimage of <strong data-start=\"282\" data-end=\"290\">1985<\/strong>, and the house was definitively blessed in <strong data-start=\"336\" data-end=\"344\">1987<\/strong> by <strong data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"371\">D. Jos\u00e9 Oca\u00f1a Mesa<\/strong>, parish priest of the Carmen and spiritual advisor of the brotherhood. Since then, the Brotherhood House has been the home of the Lucena Roc\u00edo pilgrims in the village, a place of welcome, fellowship, prayer and brotherhood during the pilgrimages and the Pentecost Pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"645\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"645\">The Simpecado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"647\" data-end=\"803\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The great spiritual symbol of the brotherhood is its <strong data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"709\">Simpecado<\/strong>, a standard representing the Virgin&#8217;s permanent presence during the pilgrimage and the acts of worship. Over its history, the brotherhood has had several Simpecados. The first, made in Lucena for the <strong data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"946\">1972<\/strong> presentation, was simple and small, featuring the image of the Virgin alongside the castle and the star, symbols of the city.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1225\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second Simpecado, unveiled in <strong data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1124\">1973<\/strong>, was made of white satin embroidered in gold and presided over the brotherhood&#8217;s pilgrimages for decades. Of particular importance was the third Simpecado, blessed in <strong data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1294\">1995<\/strong>, designed by brother <strong data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1343\">Antonio Budia Sab\u00e1n<\/strong> and enriched with silverwork from the workshops of <strong data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1427\">Juan Angulo Servi\u00e1n<\/strong>. Inspired by a Baroque altarpiece and the camar\u00edn of <strong data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1510\">Mar\u00eda Sant\u00edsima de Araceli<\/strong>, it combined embroidery, silver and Marian and Christological symbolism in a composition of enormous artistic richness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1623\" data-end=\"1937\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The current Simpecado was blessed on <strong data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"1683\">23 June 2007<\/strong> and made its first pilgrimage at Pentecost <strong data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1737\">2008<\/strong>. Embroidered in gold on red velvet, its design incorporates the coat of arms of Lucena and that of the <strong data-start=\"1836\" data-end=\"1860\">Parroquia del Carmen<\/strong>, making it one of the brotherhood&#8217;s great devotional emblems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"2271\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Simpecado processes on a cart drawn by mules. The brotherhood&#8217;s first cart, made of wood polychromed in white and gold, was designed by <strong data-start=\"2101\" data-end=\"2124\">Manuel Arroyo Puech<\/strong> and unveiled in <strong data-start=\"2140\" data-end=\"2148\">1978<\/strong>. It was later replaced by the current silver cart, made in the Lucena workshops of <strong data-start=\"2251\" data-end=\"2270\">Hermanos Gradit<\/strong>. During the pilgrimage, the Simpecado is never left alone. It is always accompanied by pilgrims fulfilling vows, walking behind it in silence, praying, or even barefoot, in one of the most profound expressions of Roc\u00edo spirituality.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2517\" data-end=\"2547\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong data-start=\"2517\" data-end=\"2547\">The Brotherhood&#8217;s Medal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2549\" data-end=\"2767\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The brotherhood&#8217;s medal is another of its great symbols of identity. The earliest medals, popularly known as &#8220;de pandereta&#8221; (tambourine-style), featured the image of Our Lady of Roc\u00edo and a green and white cord. In <strong data-start=\"2772\" data-end=\"2780\">1977<\/strong>, brother <strong data-start=\"2793\" data-end=\"2816\">Manuel Arroyo Puech<\/strong> designed the current medal, inspired by the coat of arms of Lucena and enriched with the image of Our Lady of Roc\u00edo and the city&#8217;s historic symbols: the castle, the star and the flower.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3004\" data-end=\"3049\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong data-start=\"3004\" data-end=\"3049\">Worship, Social Action and Brotherhood Life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3051\" data-end=\"3358\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong data-start=\"3054\" data-end=\"3105\">Brotherhood of Our Lady of Roc\u00edo of Lucena<\/strong> maintains an intense spiritual, devotional and social life throughout the year, while also keeping close collaboration with the <strong data-start=\"3244\" data-end=\"3286\">Parroquia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Carmen<\/strong> and taking part in various charitable and fraternal aid initiatives. Every January it holds its <strong data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3421\">General Assembly of Members<\/strong>, where the corporation&#8217;s key matters are discussed and the appointment of the Hermana or Hermano Mayor is ratified.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3546\" data-end=\"3854\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of particular importance is the traditional <strong data-start=\"3587\" data-end=\"3608\">Changing of the Medal<\/strong>, held after the feast of Candlemas. In this deeply symbolic act, the outgoing Hermana or Hermano Mayor hands the distinctive medal to whoever takes on the responsibility of representing the brotherhood during the new Roc\u00edo year. Two weeks after Easter, the preparatory devotions for Pentecost begin with the celebration of the <strong data-start=\"3971\" data-end=\"3989\">Solemn Triduum<\/strong>, days of prayer that include the Rosary, the Eucharist and fraternal fellowship.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4069\" data-end=\"4405\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Saturday culminates with the traditional <strong data-start=\"4106\" data-end=\"4126\">Roc\u00edo Preg\u00f3n<\/strong>, one of the most eagerly awaited events on the Lucena Roc\u00edo calendar, where the pregonero&#8217;s heartfelt words announce the imminent start of the pilgrimage. During the same event, the Pentecost poster is unveiled and the brotherhood&#8217;s <strong data-start=\"4370\" data-end=\"4388\">Gold Medal<\/strong> is awarded. The day concludes with the traditional <strong data-start=\"4446\" data-end=\"4467\">Brotherhood Dinner<\/strong>, reflecting the close-knit, welcoming and participatory character that defines the corporation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4554\" data-end=\"4829\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>music also holds an essential place<\/strong> in the life of the brotherhood. The sounds of the Roc\u00edo choir, the pipe and the tabor accompany both the acts of worship and the pilgrimage, becoming an inseparable part of the spiritual and festive identity of the Lucena Roc\u00edo pilgrims. The brotherhood also maintains a strongly intergenerational character, in which whole families, young Roc\u00edo devotees and new pilgrims take an active part in passing on a devotion handed down from generation to generation, keeping the essence of Roc\u00edo alive in Lucena.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5114\" data-end=\"5141\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong data-start=\"5114\" data-end=\"5141\">Pentecost and the Pilgrimage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5143\" data-end=\"5417\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The departure for the village is one of the most exciting moments of the year. After the <strong data-start=\"5233\" data-end=\"5252\">Pilgrims&#8217; Mass<\/strong>, the Simpecado&#8217;s cart leaves the <strong data-start=\"5291\" data-end=\"5315\">Parroquia del Carmen<\/strong> and travels through the streets of Lucena amid cheers, flower petals, fireworks and the company of numerous faithful. From that moment, the true Roc\u00edo pilgrimage begins: days of fellowship, prayer and sacrifice in which the dust, the tiredness and the long days are transformed into a shared experience of faith.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5629\" data-end=\"5815\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The praying of the Angelus, the Salves recited as evening falls, the stops along the way and the fellowship among pilgrims turn the pilgrimage into a genuine spiritual and human experience. Arrival at the village of <strong data-start=\"5842\" data-end=\"5854\">El Roc\u00edo<\/strong> and the official presentation before the feet of the Virgin represent one of the most defining moments for the brotherhood. During Pentecost, the Brotherhood House of Lucena becomes a permanent space of encounter and fellowship for the Lucena Roc\u00edo pilgrims.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6121\" data-end=\"6347\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Everything culminates in the early hours of <strong data-start=\"6154\" data-end=\"6178\">Pentecost Monday<\/strong>, when, after the traditional leap over the grille, <strong data-start=\"6228\" data-end=\"6248\">Our Lady of Roc\u00edo<\/strong> visits the Lucena Simpecado in one of the most emotional and fervent moments of the entire Pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6349\" data-end=\"6389\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong data-start=\"6349\" data-end=\"6389\">A Deeply Rooted Devotion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6391\" data-end=\"6688\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong data-start=\"6394\" data-end=\"6445\">Brotherhood of Our Lady of Roc\u00edo of Lucena<\/strong> is today one of the most beloved and deeply rooted Glory brotherhoods in the city.
