The Official Processional Route of the Great Passion Procession ‘Lucena Vive la Pasión’, to be held on 27th September, constitutes the central shared section through which all the participating cortèges will pass during this historic event. It will be the place from which the chronological unfolding of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ, may be contemplated, accompanied by the artistry of Lucena’s ‘santería’, the richness of its processional images, and the town’s sound heritage, expressed through renowned marching bands and the drum and ‘torralbo’ of Lucena. 

Each brotherhood will begin its processional route from its church or canonical seat, although not all the devotional images will depart from their usual location. Following their processional departure, the participating cortèges will progressively merge into a unified 550-metre section, forming the one-way Official Processional Route, which will be appropriately enclosed with barriers. Spectators will be able to stand behind these barriers throughout the route until full capacity is reached.

Timetable and Organization

The Official Processional Route, appropriately enclosed with barriers, will open at 7.00 pm with the arrival of the first processional throne, while the last is expected to enter at around 10.30 pm. The Official Processional Route has been designed by Manuel Roldán, the architect also responsible for its Safety and Evacuation Plan. 

The event organisation will be supported by twenty-four private security personnel, together with the presence of the Local Police, National Police, Civil Protection,medical teams, and a large number of volunteers responsible for access control working alongside personnel from the Parish Caritas organisations. Also taking part will be processional throne delegates, each responsible for a particular throne and represented by current and former officials of the Agrupación de Cofradías of Lucena. The passage of the processional cortèges has been designed to be continuous and fluid, with a streamlined external cortège, while preserving the essence of each brotherhood and the distinctive identity of Holy Week in Lucena. Participation will therefore be limited exclusively to the ‘santeros’, ‘porrillas’, drummers, ‘torralbos’, the Trumpet of Silence, insignia bearers, four members of the Governing Board of each brotherhood, one steward, together with the acolytes, thurifers and members of the musical ensembles. 

All participants must carry official identification passes. Throughout the Official Processional Route, water distribution points will be provided, and the singing of ‘saetas’ will not be allowed. 

Live Broadcast  of the Official Processional Route 

The Official Processional Route will be broadcast live by Videoluc Televisión, Canal Cofrade (reaching more than 40 municipalities across the 8 Andalusian provinces, which can be consulted here), PTV Telecom (in Córdoba), Canal 7TV (through 36 television channels across the eight Andalusian provinces), and ‘Paso a Paso’ on Canal Sur Radio, all providing special coverage of the event. In addition, Cadena SER Lucena and Videoluc Televisión will broadcast special programming throughout the precedingt week, complemented by extensive coverage from local media outlets (Lucena Hoy, Paseíllo, and Glamour Lucena) as well as provincial, regional and national media.

More than one hundred media professionals have been accredited, in addition to the numerous blogs and social media accounts devoted to the brotherhood tradition, particularly those based in Lucena but also from across Andalusia, all of which will likewise play their part in promoting this major event. A way of bringing our Holy Week closer to those who are unable to experience it in person along the processional route.

Safety Recommendations  for Spectators

• Before the celebration of the Great Passion Procession, please follow the officialinformation issued by the Agrupación de Cofradías of Lucena through our website, official social media channels and the media.

• If you are travelling by car, please note that free parking is available at various locations throughout the town. Consult the map on the official website to locate them. From there, you can follow the Google Maps routes to reach each of the churches. The bus drop-off point is located by the fountaiin at the Fairground, while car park is available at the Ciudad de Lucena Football Stadium.

• Arrive in good time to avoid overcrowding. The first processional throne departs at 6.25 pm, and the last concludes its procession at midnight. The Official Processional Route will operate from 7.00 pm until 11.00 pm. If you have a reserved seat, please bring your ticket, occupy the seat indicated on it, and contact the security staff should any issue arise.

• The Official Processional Route will be closed to the public from 6.00 pm to facilitate the organisation of the event. From that time onwards, access through the Official Processional Route will not be allowed. In addition,the streets forming the Official Processional Route will be closed to traffic from 4.00 pm, and the Plaza Nueva car park will remain closed from 4.00 pm until 11.00 pm.

• Always follow the instructions of the Police, Civil Protection and volunteers, who are there to ensure your safety. Please be aware that the movement of pedestrians and vehicles may be restricted. If you are about to enter a street that is heavily crowded, choose an alternative route.

• If you are attending with children, keep them closed to you at all times and agree on a meeting point in case you become separated. If you are attending with companions or as part of a group, agree on a landmark where you can meet again should you become separated. You may also go to the Civil Protection marquee in Plaza San Miguel, which will serve as an information and assistance point.

• Remember to keep yourself hydrated, especially in hot weather, and do not obstruct emergency exits or evacuation routes. Clearly signposted public toilets will be available throughout the historic centre.

• At all times, follow the instructions of security personnel, volunteers, the police and Civil Protection. Do not enter the space reserved for the passage of the processional cortège or cross between the processional thrones. Always ensure that children do no step into the roadway.

• Once the event has concluded, leave the area in an orderly manner, follow the instructions provided, and cooperate with the event organisers.

IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY:

• The Great Passion Procession is supported by a Safety and Emergency Plan.

• Four ambulances will be deployed at strategic locations along the processional route, together with defibrillators positioned at various points. In the event of a medical emergency, contat a member of the security team or call 112.

• In the event of any incident, keep calm: do not shout, run or push. Avoid moving against the flow of people and always follow the instructions of the security teams to help prevent dangerous situations.
