Confraternity Proclamations and Exaltations: The Voice of the Brotherhoods and Confraternities

The word holds a prominent place within the religious brotherhood tradition of Lucena Beyond the Official Holy Week Proclamation, organised by the Agrupación de Cofradías of Lucena, numerous Passion and Glory brotherhoods and confraternities hold annual proclamations, exaltations, and literary events that herald the arrival of their principal celebrations and contribute to enriching the cultural and devotional life of the town.

These events have become established as spaces for gathering and expression, where memory, faith, confraternity experience, and popular devotion are conveyed through the art of oratory. In many cases, they constitute genuine social and cultural events that bring together members, devotees, and the general public around the spoken word and the emotions inspired by Holy Week and the Glory devotions.

Among the proclamations with the deepest roots and greatest significance are the Pregón de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Proclamation of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene) and the Pregón de las Glorias de María Santísima de Araceli (Glories Proclamation of Our Lady of Araceli), two of the principal landmarks of Lucena’s confraternity and religious calendar, owing to the historical and devotional importance of both dedications.

As part of Holy Week, the town also host the Pregón de la Pasión Franciscana (Franciscan Passion Proclamation), the Valley Exaltation, the Pregón de la Santa Fe (Proclamation of the Holy Faith) and the Pregón de la Juventud Cofrade de la Cofradía de Humillación y Servitas (Youth Proclamation of the Confraternity of the Humiliation and the Servites), which focuses on generational renewal and the involvement of younger members in confraternity life. Likewise, the Hermandad de Tambores (Brotherhood of Drummers) holds the presentation of its calendar, an event that also become a forum for the exaltation and promotion of one of the most distinctive sound traditions of Holy Week in Lucena.

Among the Glory confraternities, particular prominence is also given to the Pregón de las Glorias de Nuestra Señora del Rocío (Glories Proclamation of Our Lady of El Rocío) and the Pregón de Santa Teresa de Jesús (Proclamation of Saint Teresa of Jesus), both examples of the dynamism and vitality maintained throughout the year by Lucena’s brotherhoods and confraternities.

To mark anniversaries and commemorations, various brotherhoods and confraternities of Lucena have also held extraordinary proclamations and exaltations, conceived as commemorative events of particular importance. These events, organised around foundation anniversaries, coronations, anniversaries of sacred images, or other significant historical occasions, have contributed to enriching the cultural and literary heritage of Holy Week in Lucena, while also strengthening the town’s emotional and devotional bond with its traditions.

In recent years, the presentation of individual posters by various Passion and Glory brotherhoods and confraternities to announce their respective penitential processions and processional outing has also become firmly established. These complement the Official Holy Week Poster of Lucena, whose unveiling constitutes one of the most widely attended events of the confraternity calendar and symbolically marks the beginning of the countdown to Holy Week. These events, beyond their artistic and promotional dimension, are often accompanied by exaltations, literary addresses, and reflections on the identity, history, and distinctiveness of each fraternity, thereby also becoming spaces for fellowship and cultural dissemination.

All of this forms an extensive calendar of cultural and devotional events that demonstrates how Holy Week and the religious traditions of Lucena are experienced far beyond the penitential processions, maintaining anintense level of activity throughout all 365 days of the year.
